Our history
Cibes was founded in 1947 by civil engineer Bertil Svedberg. Driven by a passion for innovation, he developed the modern screw-driven lift system that became the foundation of Cibes safe and reliable lift solutions. His inventive spirit still lives on within Cibes today, inspiring us to create future-ready lifts that unite comfort, quality, and innovation with timeless elegance.
Meet the founder of Cibes
Bertil Svedberg was born in 1916 in Njurunda, a small town in northern Sweden. His interest in engineering took him to Stockholm, where he studied at the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, earning his Master of Science in Engineering in 1942. His early career at a forward-thinking engineering company specialising in pump and heating systems helped spark his entrepreneurial spirit.
In 1947, Bertil Svedberg founded Elektroborg AB and created the Cibes brand. During the 1970s, he went on to develop a modern and safe screw-driven lift for housing adaptation. His invention shaped the future of Cibes lift solutions, and as new lift models were introduced, Cibes continued to grow. Bertil Svedberg remained closely involved in the company for nearly four decades, leaving behind a legacy of high-quality engineering, innovative design, and lasting influence on Cibes.
Timeline
Cibes began as a small Swedish manufacturer of lifting equipment that grew into a global leader in platform lift solutions. Today, we are part of Cibes Lift Group and we have production units across three continents and more than 270 distributing partners in over 70 countries worldwide. Explore the key milestones in our history and discover how our Swedish roots continue to shape our global growth.
1947 –1969
Bertil Svedberg founded the Cibes brand, and the focus of company activities gradually shifted from industrial lifting equipment to wheelchair lifts for home adaptation.
1947
In 1947, the Cibes brand was created by the Swedish engineer and innovator Bertil Svedberg. The brand was marketed by his company Elektroborg AB in Stockholm.

1950s
In the 1950s, Bertil Svedberg started manufacturing chain-driven construction elevators with rated loads between 200 kg and 1000 kg.

1960s
The demand for affordable accessibility solutions for private homes and residential buildings increased in Sweden. In the mid-1960s, we launched a hydraulic platform lift designed for wheelchair accessibility and housing adaptation.
1970 – 1989
Bertil Svedberg developed a modern, screw-driven lift system for housing adaptation. The demand for Cibes safe and reliable lifts increased and more screw-driven models were developed. In the late 1980s, Cibes started exporting lifts to the neighbouring countries of Sweden.
1970s
In the early 1970s, we launched a screw-driven lift with a completely new design, that would become the forerunner of today’s B type lifts. The lift model was wheelchair accessible and equipped with built-in safety features, such as safety bars. That made this early Cibes wheelchair lift a cutting-edge product in the accessibility field and perfect for housing adaptation.

1980s
In the 1980s, we started exporting low-speed lifts to neighbouring countries in Scandinavia. Research and development also intensified and resulted in a low-speed, screw-driven platform lift enclosed by shaft walls, also known as an A type lift, or a vertical platform lift. This new lift type increased the demand for Cibes platform lift solutions.

1990 – 1999
The Cibes A5000 platform lift model was launched, export sales started to take off and an international expansion began. When the European Platform and Stairlift Association (EPSA) was created in 1999 to harmonise rules and regulations across the EU and the UK, Cibes was one of the founding members.

1997
We started exporting low-speed lifts to countries outside of Scandinavia on a larger scale, marking the beginning of our rapid international expansion.
1999
During the 1990s the need for wheelchair lifts and other accessibility solutions increased throughout Europe and so did the need for harmonisation of rules and regulations. In 1999, we were one of the 24 lift companies that founded European Platform and Stairlift Association (EPSA), a non-profit organisation, working to harmonise rules and regulations for platform lifts and stairlifts in the European Union and the United Kingdom.
